2-day camel trek with a nomad bivouac

Two days in a caravan, far from everything, as the nomads did

How it works: 2-day camel trek with a nomad bivouac

  1. 1

    Day 1, morning — Departure

Departure at 9:00 from Hassilabied. The caravan carries water, food and blankets; you walk or ride the camel, as you prefer. Two to three hours among the highest dunes.

  2. 2

Day 1, lunch — A stop in the shade

Lunch with salads, bread and fruit in the shade of an acacia, then rest during the hottest hours.

  3. 3

Day 1, afternoon — Towards the bivouac

Another two hours' walk to the nomad bivouac. Sunset from the dune, bread baked under the sand and tajine on the embers. Night in a nomad tent or, if you like, under the stars.

  4. 4

    Day 2 — Return

Sunrise, breakfast and back along a different route, passing a well where the shepherds' animals drink. Arrival in Hassilabied around midday.

FAQ

Do I need to be fit?

No, but you need to be in good health: you walk 3-4 hours a day on sand, alternating with the camel.

Are there bathrooms at the bivouac?

No, the bivouac is simple and nomadic: there's water to wash with, but no showers. That's exactly its charm.

Can it be done in summer?

From June to August we don't recommend it because of the heat. The best period is from October to April.
