Charming riads and kasbahs and, in the desert, comfortable Berber tents with an authentic atmosphere.
Options and supplement10 days from the desert to the north, through medinas, blue mountains and the ocean
You start with your feet in the sand of Erg Chebbi and finish facing the ocean in Casablanca. In between there is everything: the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas with their monkeys, the oldest medina in the Arab world in Fez, the blue lanes of Chefchaouen and Tangier looking across to Europe.
It is a one-way itinerary, never doubling back, ideal if you arrive in Errachidia and fly home from Casablanca or Tangier.
Morning departure along the Ziz valley, the 'river of palms': from the viewpoint above the palm grove you see kilometres of green in the middle of the desert. Stops in Erfoud, at the fossil workshops, and in Rissani, with its souk and mud-brick ksars. In the afternoon we reach the dunes and ride camels to the camp, just in time for sunset. Night at the Erg Chebbi camp.
Sunrise on the dunes and a 4x4 tour: nomads, Khamlia and the flamingo lake when there is water. Free afternoon and night in a hotel at the foot of the dunes.
A long but beautiful day (about 8 hours with stops): the Ziz gorges and the Legionnaire's tunnel, Midelt at the foot of Jebel Ayachi, the Azrou cedar forest with its macaques and Ifrane, the 'Switzerland of Morocco' with its pitched roofs. Arrival in Fez in the evening.
A full day in the medina of Fez el-Bali with an official guide: the Bab Bou Jeloud gate, the Bou Inania madrasa, the Chouara tannery seen from the terraces and the brass and weaving workshops. In the afternoon, the royal palace and the Jewish quarter.
The Roman ruins of Volubilis with their mosaics, the holy town of Moulay Idriss and Meknes with the Bab Mansour gate. In the afternoon we drive up through the Rif hills to Chefchaouen.
A free day in the blue lanes: Outa el-Hammam square, the kasbah and the path up to the Spanish mosque for sunset. If you like, take a trip to the Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge.
The white medina of Tetouan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and then Tangier: the kasbah, Café Hafa on the cliffs, Cape Spartel, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and the Caves of Hercules.
Free morning in Tangier and transfer to Asilah, a seaside town with Portuguese walls and murals that artists paint every summer. Grilled fish for dinner.
Coastal road to Rabat, the capital: the Kasbah of the Udayas with its white and blue houses, the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.
Last morning in Rabat, perhaps at the medina market or in the Andalusian garden of the Udayas. One hour's drive to Casablanca and a visit to the Hassan II Mosque, with its 210-metre minaret over the ocean. Transfer to the airport or your hotel.
