The best moment of the day, at a camel's pace
Around five in the afternoon the light softens and the Erg Chebbi dunes turn from yellow to orange, then red. That's when the caravan sets off: a Berber cameleer walks alongside you, holding the rope of the first dromedary, and leads you between the sand ridges to a viewpoint.
There you get off, walk up to the top of the dune and wait for sunset in silence, perhaps with a tea. It's the simplest and best-loved experience in Merzouga: suitable for everyone, children included.
- Guided caravanled by a Berber cameleer
- Sunset from the duneoverlooking Erg Chebbi
- Unforgettable photoswith the long shadows of the camels
- Suitable for everyoneincluding children from age 4
How it works: Sunset camel ride

4:30 pm — Meeting
We pick you up at your hotel or meet at the edge of the dunes. We explain how to get on and off the camel (the secret is to hold on tight and lean back when it stands up).
-
2
5:00 pm — Caravan through the dunes
About an hour's ride through the dunes, in single file, with the cameleer leading the caravan on foot. We stop for photos along the way.

6:00 pm — Sunset
You get off the camel and walk up to the top of a dune to watch the sun set behind the erg. If you like, you can run down or try sandboarding.

FAQ
Is it suitable for children?
Yes, from about age 4. Younger children can ride the camel with a parent.
Can it be done privately?
Yes, for a small supplement the caravan is just for you and your group, and you choose the time.
Is riding a camel uncomfortable?
Not for an hour. The only moment to be careful is when the camel stands up and kneels down: the cameleer always warns you.
