The question we’re asked most often is always the same: what’s the best time to go to the desert? The short answer is October to April. But every season has its advantages, and even summer, if well organised, can make for a wonderful trip. Here’s what to expect month by month in Merzouga and Erg Chebbi.
The desert climate in brief
In the Sahara the difference between day and night temperatures is huge: up to 20 degrees. In winter you go from mild days to nights close to zero; in summer daytime temperatures easily exceed 40 degrees, while nights stay warm. It rains very little, but in spring the wind can pick up, and with it the odd sandstorm.
Spring (March – May)
It’s one of the best times. Days are warm but not scorching, nights are cool and skies are clear. In late April and May the Valley of Roses blooms, on the road between Marrakech and the desert. The only risk is wind: on some days in March and April the sand rises and the sky turns yellow. It usually lasts only a few hours.
Summer (June – August)
It’s very hot, but the desert doesn’t stop: the timetable changes. Excursions take place at sunrise and sunset, and in the middle of the day you stay in the shade or by the pool. It’s also the season of the traditional sand bath, which draws visitors to Merzouga from all over Morocco. If you travel in summer, choose accommodation with a pool and air conditioning for the night before or after the camp.
Autumn (September – November)
For us it’s the perfect season. The heat eases by the end of September, nights are pleasant and the light on the dunes is golden. October and November are also ideal months for long trips combining desert, mountains and imperial cities.
Winter (December – February)
During the day it’s pleasant, even in a T-shirt, but at night the desert is cold, sometimes close to zero. The camps have heavy blankets, but bring a warm jacket anyway. On the High Atlas road it can snow: the Tizi n’Tichka pass sometimes closes for a few hours. The upside? Crystal-clear skies and spectacular stars.
Ramadan and holidays
During Ramadan, which changes date every year, tours run normally: hotels, camps and restaurants for tourists are open. In the villages some places close during the day and the pace is slower, but in the evening there’s a special festive atmosphere.
Our advice
- Ideal period: mid-September to mid-November and March to May.
- For the stars: choose moonless nights, especially in winter.
- In summer: yes, but with activities at sunrise and sunset.
